Enron – The BIG Sponsor of Global Warming Hysteria!

”Enron chairman Ken Lay, who presided over one of the biggest corporate frauds in history, was an early, passionate proponent of both cap-and-trade and Kyoto.

A member of former U.S. president Bill Clinton’s Council on Sustainable Development, Lay met with Clinton and vice-president Al Gore, urging them to push ahead.

As the Washington Post reported in January, 2002: ”The Clinton administration’s interest in an international agreement to combat global warming … dovetailed with Enron’s business plans. Enron officials envisioned the company at the centre of a new trading system, in which industries worldwide could buy and sell credits to emit carbon dioxide …”

Following the 1997 UN conference which drafted Kyoto: ”Enron officials … expressed elation at the results … An internal memo said the Kyoto agreement, if implemented, would ‘do more to promote Enron’s business than almost any other regulatory initiative outside of restructuring the energy and natural gas industries’ …”

Another memo boasted it would be ”good for Enron stock.”

In his book, The Politically Incorrect Guide to Global Warming and Environmentalism, Christopher Horner, who worked briefly in Enron’s Washington office in 1997 on carbon capping before ”I raised questions … which were not well received,” describes how Enron worked closely with environmental groups and other firms to push Kyoto.

At all levels the company would lobby and connive with green groups and like-minded Big Business to put power-hungry America on an energy diet through the Kyoto Protocol or legislation to the same effect. Meanwhile the company steadily bought up businesses to provide those renewable energy sources that Kyoto would force-feed on the population of the developed world.”

”It does illustrate, as Horner notes, ”that the debate is not greens versus business, but quite often greens and business versus consumers and the economy.”

That we know from Europe‘s three-year-old cap-and-trade market, the Emissions Trading Scheme. The legal things happening there have been scary enough.”

Cap-and-trade good biz: Enron Is that enough to frighten you?

Sun, June 8, 2008

By Lorrie Goldstein

It’s hard to know which is more frightening.

Is it Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty and Quebec Premier Jean Charest merrily emerging from a joint meeting of their provincial cabinets last week to announce, in so many words:

”Hey, guess what? We’re setting up an interprovincial carbon cap-and-trade market, details to come, in 2010. Don’t worry, be happy”?

Or is it environmentalists boasting that even big business now favours putting a price on carbon, either through a cap-and-trade system or a carbon tax?

Oh, you can bet big business wants to price carbon.

In fact, do you know which big business in the U.S. was a major player in pushing for carbon trading and the Kyoto accord over a decade ago?

Enron. Yes, you read that right.

Enron chairman Ken Lay, who presided over one of the biggest corporate frauds in history, was an early, passionate proponent of both cap-and-trade and Kyoto.

That Enron’s fraudsters, financial backers of many Democrats as well as Republicans, smelled a way early on to cash in on carbon trading and Kyoto doesn’t of itself discredit these ideas.

But you’d think it would give our green-happy politicians pause.

It does illustrate, as Horner notes, ”that the debate is not greens versus business, but quite often greens and business versus consumers and the economy.”

That we know from Europe‘s three-year-old cap-and-trade market, the Emissions Trading Scheme. The legal things happening there have been scary enough.

Major carbon emitters convinced their governments to give them more permits than their total emissions, contrary to the whole idea of cap-and-trade — you cap and lower emissions by awarding fewer permits.

The winners have been speculators, hedge funds and big energy companies, some of which were given permits for free, then passed along the costs to consumers as if they had paid for them.

The losers have been consumers, who have seen their electricity bills skyrocket.

Because there were too many permits, their price crashed, making it cheaper for inefficient companies to buy more permits than reduce emissions.

Scary? Think about this.

If Ontario and Quebec are to create a cap-and-trade market by 2010, very soon they will sit down with major carbon emitters, loaded with experts who know this stuff cold.

Representing us will be government bureaucrats, many of whom have never worked in the field, political aides anxious to make a deal so their bosses can announce it and politicians distracted by other issues.

Who do you think is going to pick whose pocket (legally, of course) in that negotiation?

If you think it’s the folks who represent us, remember this.

When they get their pockets picked, we all pay.

“At all levels the company (ENRON) would lobby and connive with green groups and like-minded Big Business to put power-hungry America on an energy diet through the Kyoto Protocol or legislation to the same effect.
