Why Does Al Gore Hate The Press?

Titta mycket noga på bilden nedan. Det är en typisk Al Gore ”in action”.  Han gästtalade på en konferens (RSA Conference 2008) som gick av stapeln förra veckan i San Francisco. Detta är alltså en publik konferens och utställning.

Men Al Gore, har som vanligt, som ABSOLUT Villkor för att deltaga att ALLA journalister är portförbjudna. Denne man som lever gott på att predika Gloom and Doom (han tar mellan $100 000 till $190 000 för ett framträdande), som aktivt försöker tysta alla kritiker ”Debatten är över”, ”Det finns inget att diskutera” etc.

Och som jag konstaterat så många gånger tidigare på denna blogg – där massmedia har sålt ut sin journalistiska heder och så totalt och ensidigt går Global Warming Hysterins ärenden (senast så blev ju BBC avslöjad med byxorna nere). Denna press vill alltså INTE Al Gore prata med. Intressant!

Men det är ju klart, det kan ju finnas en och annan journalist kvar som tar sitt jobb på allvar och faktiskt ställer några ”besvärliga” frågor. Och eftersom ”Debatten är över” så verkar ju detta helt överflödigt att behöva prata med massmedia.

Och det här är inga nya påfund. Han har en lång historia bakom sig där press och frågor är förbjudna. Den här historien är en höjdare. Bara Al Gore skulle kunna komma på tanken att FÖRBJUDA (I ALLA FORMER) referenser till, publicering etc. av FÖRELÄSNINGAR PÅ EN JOURNALISTHÖGSKOLA!:

 ”Gore did the same thing immediately after the 2000 election, when he came to teach at Columbia University‘s Graduate School of Journalism. His team cut a deal with the university that would make the class off the record, meaning no one could use the materials from Gore’s lectures. The irony was lost on no one and caused an uproar both in the media and in the school. Gore and the school changed their minds after the first class, but the damage to his and the school’s reputations had been done. ”

Här finns en intressant kopia av ett standard kontrakt som Al Gore kräver för att uppträda. Mycket intressant läsning och där finns klausulen om att journalister och media skall vara portförbjudna. Och naturligtvis så kräver han första klass hotell – är man miljövän så är man!

Al Gore’s Top Secret Speech At RSA

If any RSA Conference attendee wants to loan me his or her RSA badge on Friday afternoon for about an hour, send me an e-mail.

I was planning to attend Al Gore’s keynote on emerging green technologies that day from 2:15 PM to 3:00 PM, but it turns out that members of the media aren’t going to be allowed in.

Evidently, Gore will be discussing the ingredients in Soylent Green and only wants a select few to know what goes into those tasty wafers.

I asked the three public relations women sitting at the desk outside the RSA Conference press room about options beyond attending Gore’s keynote in person. ”There’s an overflow room, with live video feeds of the keynotes,” I suggest. ”Will we be able to listen to Gore there?”

No. Smiles.

Will there be a transcript?

No. Smiles. Gore’s contract says that the media isn’t allowed, they explain.

I ponder. Could it be that Gore has invented a table-top fusion device and that secrecy is necessary to prevent the inevitable economic shockwave that would follow from free, limitless, clean energy?

No. There really isn’t a good explanation. (My colleague from Dark Reading, Tim Wilson, suggested maybe Gore or his handlers are afraid someone will ask questions.)

Gore’s prohibition on the press is particularly absurd in light of the fact that more or less everyone nowadays is a de facto member of the media. Surely, some of those allowed to attend Gore’s classified speech will be bloggers.

So in the event I’m unable to sneak in under someone else’s badge — Gore’s Secret Service detachment may not take this idea in the spirit it is intended — I hope the citizen press corps will rise up against arbitrary tyranny and report Gore’s words verbatim, in real-time, through blogs and Twitter, by text message, mobile phone video camera, laptop Web cam, and open phone line.

As former President Reagan might have said, ”Al Gore, tear down this wall!”

Al Gore is speaking at the RSA security conference in San Francisco this afternoon. But good luck finding out what he says: Reporters are banned from the event.

We don’t know what’s more disheartening: The fact that the former veep is trying to keep a trade show talk private — or that this isn’t the first time he’s been oddly press-shy.

When he was a guest lecturer at the Columbia University‘s journalism school in 2001, he tried imposed a gag order on his students, but eventually backed off. And in January 07, he banned the press from a speech he was giving in Sioux Falls, S.D.

We can sort of understand why Al wanted to keep junior journalists from writing about his chat in 2001 — losing a presidential election can make you pretty grumpy. But now? He’s Al the Great, winner of both a Nobel and an Oscar. Lighten up, Al! Or don’t ask us to write about your next movie.

Al Gore Bars Press from His RSA Conference Appearance

Today the RSA security conference sent out an announcement detailing the rules of engagement for press covering the event (which begins April 7 in San Francisco). At the bottom of the e-mail is a message noting that in accordance with an agreement the conference made with former Vice President Al Gore, press will not be allowed to attend his keynote presentation at the conference. Video recordings, broadcasts and photography are also prohibited.

Press protestations are becoming a habit of Gore’s.

When he gave his now-famous global warming slide presentation at the TED conference in 2006 (Technology, Entertainment and Design) I tried to approach him after the presentation to ask a question and was thwarted by his aggressive spokesman who planted himself between me and the former v.p. and griped that I’d been allowed to attend the presentation. He said the talk was supposed to have been off-limits to press (although the conference organizers never mentioned this to me, and no one tried to prevent me from entering the auditorium, although my badge clearly indicated I was press). Gore’s spokesman took down my name and affiliation and warned that I wasn’t to write anything about the event.

Gore, whose speaker fee is reportedly $100,000, spoke again at TED this year, which I wrote about for Wired’s Epicenter blog. There were no restrictions on press covering that talk other than regarding photos. The conference wanted press to use only official photos provided by TED.

Last year the Smoking Gun published a copy of Gore’s speaker’s contract, which stipulates that all press are to be barred from his appearances and that the conditions of the contract cannot be disclosed to anyone. The contract refers to Gore throughout as Vice President Gore, rather than former vice president.
